The webinar titled “Measuring Circularity in Europe,” organized by the European Environment Agency (EEA), aimed to present the latest tools, methodologies, and indicators used to track progress towards a circular economy within the European Union.
The event opened with remarks by Daniel Montalvo (EEA), who stressed the need for harmonised approaches to measuring circularity across member states. He emphasized that establishing common metrics is crucial for monitoring systemic changes and achieving long-term sustainability goals.
Presentations by Ioannis Bakas (EEA) and Oscar Gomez (Eurostat) followed, focusing on the EU Circular Economy Monitoring Framework. They shared insights into how circularity indicators are currently being developed, what data is being used, and how these indicators inform policymaking at the EU level.
A special session was dedicated to product circularity. Tobias Nielsen (EEA) and Olivia Chassais (DG Environment) introduced methodologies for assessing product lifespans, repairability, and reuse potential. They demonstrated how extending product use can significantly reduce the need for raw materials and lower the environmental footprint across product value chains.
In the final part of the webinar, a panel discussion was held with active audience participation. Questions focused on the challenges of data collection, national differences in circularity monitoring, and how these tools could be adopted outside the EU. The event fostered valuable knowledge exchange and encouraged cross-sectoral collaboration.
The webinar was attended by project team member Asst.Prof. Aleksandra Jerkov, who followed the event with the objective of exploring innovative tools for measuring circularity and evaluating their applicability in the context of Western Balkan countries. Participation in this webinar offered an excellent opportunity to connect with key experts and institutions working on circular economy metrics at the European level.
